Using Memory Card Adapter With 16GB memory card psp?

I am thinking about getting a 16gb memory card for my psp for christmas. I notice that it comes with an adapter. I was just wondering if you HAVE to use that adapter when using the memory card with your psp. I just don’t want to get it and find out that I have to have this big adapter sticking out of my psp when im using my memory card. Please someone tell me if you know if you have to use the adapter while using the memory stick with your psp. Thank you for you help.
