sex industry

Sprinkle asked:
Talks are starting to consider making prostitution illegal in the UK, in a bid to fight the illegal sex slave industry.
Could banning prostitution, simply put it underground, and make it more profitable for the sex slave industry, as they are already illegal?
To those think it is illegal, it is not, it is illegal to solicit for sex in the streets.

May be wrong but soliciting for sex is illegal and imho should be decriminalised and regulated for the better protection of the people involved in it, see Australia for example

No legislation will ever get rid of it. However, victims of the industry should have more support, imo.

Ginny Jin added these pithy words on Nov 13 08 at 10:15 pm

would have thought legalising it would be the answer

then there could be regulation

The Labour party has an old school puritanical feminist agenda and it has nothing to do with sex slavery prevention. They just want to stop people having sex for money because like labour MP Dennis MacShane they all think it’s “dirty”. You should have heard him in Parliament the other week talking about and I quote “Dirty old men, dirty middle aged men and dirty young men”.
I think prostitution means sexual and economic freedom for all those who take part in it by choice - which is the majority of sex workers.
Edit:
Following up on Mr Skeptic’s challenge to me below….
He says “The vast, vast majority of women in prostitution are prisoners - prisoners in fact, prisoners of poverty, prisoners of drugs, prisoners of abuse”.
That sounds like Christian soldier rhetoric to me, not grounded in fact. There are thousands of women working as escorts in the UK and elsewhere by choice because they like the money. Maybe some would say that these women are prisoners of immorality but if they don’t consider themselves to be victims then why should I or anybody else?!

I don’t think it is possible to make prostitution illegal. How?
Keeping it legal provides the safest way of controlling the sex slave industry, but they need to tighten up on this.
More help and advice for girls who like this work is what is needed, as many tend to rely on those who control them.

And for those of you reading this saying that prostitution is illegal you are wrong it never has been. It is illegal to solicit for sex and various other things connected with it are illegal.

Chris45 added these pithy words on Nov 21 08 at 2:02 am

It’s already illegal in the U.S. in all but a few isolated areas and there’s still a big problem with it.
The only way to eliminate the problems are to legalize and government regulate it so that there are no huge profits to be made by the sex slave traders.

By the way, I don’t see the difference between it being illegal to solicit sex and prostitution being illegal. One is the act and the other is the bartering. Even though the laws are worded only about the solicitation, where I live, they run the prostitutes off on a regular basis and use other laws to arrest them if they don’t leave.

Edit: I think that people on here are spending too much time worrying about whether prostitution itself is illegal or not. The fact is, that without solicitation, the prostitution could not occur; it would just be consensual sex - the money is what makes it prostitution.
So, having said that, why don’t we all concentrate on the actual question which is “fighting the sex slave industry” - not debating on whether prostitution is legal or illegal.

def yes, men have always exploited women and it should stop, they might learn to respect us more.

lily added these pithy words on Nov 24 08 at 8:23 pm

it is simply the stupidity of government.

prostitution being made illegal will not stop the sex slave industry, that is a separate issue all together. it has nothing to do with the legal sex industry.
i for one do not approve of whats legal now, but people have a right to do as they please so long as they cause no one else harm.
sex slaves are not prostitutes they are SLAVES forced to do what they do. it is not a choice. the two are not connected in anyway other than the media or politicians needing a vote or women’s groups willing to impose their idea of morality and women’s rights regardless of others opinion.

And Women like LILLY (answer 2 above) who think men make women want to be prostitutes and we exploit them. utter pug-wash. i respect women so don’t include me in your radical feminism.

What ever is eventually decided it will not change the facts

Speaking from the experience in America, absolutely nothing stops prostitution. It’s illegal almost everywhere here except Nevada and it makes no difference. I don’t know how big the sex slave industry is, but the fact is, as long as men are looking for it, someone who wants or needs the money bad enough will be there to supply. The police have too much violent crime to chase down to spend as much time as necessary to keep prostitution in check here. My theory is that if you prosecuted the purchasers in addition to the providers, you’d see a lot less in the way of any kind of sex crimes.

This trade will always be around and to protect the women and the clients both men and women we need legalize it. Access to sexual health care and protection from the pimps, if we do make making prostitution illegal then it will go deeper underground than at present. At the moment prostitution itself is not illegal but there are 36 offences linked to it, such as soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling and living off “immoral earnings”

Leo added these pithy words on Nov 28 08 at 8:20 am

Prostitution is illegal, but in my opinion it shouldn’t be.

There is clearly a market for it, so there should be legalised brothels that can be controlled by local authorities.

No one should be force to sell sex, but those who choose to should be allowed.

Sixx added these pithy words on Nov 30 08 at 10:46 pm

Banning prostitution is a ridiculous notion. Prostitution is the world’s oldest profession and if it is banned it will certainly go underground, hence putting sex workers into even more danger. I think there are more important things that policing should be focused on than criminalising a victimless crimes. I appreciate many sex workers are forced into prostitution because of social circumstances, addictions and other tragic circumstances but our resources would be better used in helping these people through these issues and providing them with skills to help them move on. However, there are a number of sex workers who are very happy at what they do and do not want to move on. Banning is not the answer! If we banned everything that was morally offencive to some then where does one draw the line.

If some societal practice is illegal, it is not regulated or controlled. Making prostitution illegal would only support the sex slave industry.

The oldest profession? There’s a few million neolithic hunter-gatherers would like a word.

Where a commodity is in demand, but restricted by law, that is the green light for organised crime to make millions. Whether it’s drink, drugs, sex, whatever - if the public want it, and the government say they can’t have it, the criminals will supply it.

The pragmatic postion would be to legalise, regulate and control the industry. If you make it legal, you can put the criminals out of business, protect those selling the commodity and ensure a safe supply of the commodity to the consumer.

If that is not acceptable for the sex industry, perhaps applying laws which already exist more rigorously would be the answer. It is already illegal to supply drugs to people, to force them to take illegal drugs, to imprison them unlawfully, to assault them, to live off the earnings of prostitution. The explotative elements of prostitution are already illegal.

Many of the women involved are in the country illegally and fear for what might happen to them if they come to the attention of the authorities - perhaps a more humane approach to their asylum / immigration status might enable them to come forward safely?

While I would not want to suggest that “KEYPOINT” is a user of prostitutes, his quote:

“I think prostitution means sexual and economic freedom for all those who take part in it by choice - which is the majority of sex workers.”

is complete and utter rubbish, and the sort of nonsense that men who use these women come out with to salve their own consciences.

The vast, vast majority of women in prostitution are prisoners - prisoners in fact, prisoners of poverty, prisoners of drugs, prisoners of abuse. Perhaps men who use prostitution could be shown the conditions leading to their ‘hosts’ situation and shown how little of the money they pay, if any, goes to the women.

Perhaps a couple of well-publicised trials where customers of imprisoned girls stood trial for rape - after all, do the girls actually consent to sex? If the answer’s no, how isn’t it a rape?

I think KEYPOINT is over-estimating the extent of the “escort / callgirl” side of the sex industry - men paying serious money for companionship and sex, where the women have more control; and underestimating the extent of the “street whore” side of the industry where for the price of a few pints, the back of a car or a back room in a massage parlour is the setting. It is the latter case where the desparate women are truly prisoners. Most are so broken that they don’t regard themselves as anything, let alone victims - which means KEYPOINT has no need to worry about them.

Mr Sceptic added these pithy words on Dec 05 08 at 4:40 am

No. It is underground as it is. Legalising it can bring about greater benefits.

As it is, sex workers can have untreated sexually transmitted diseases putting clients, and more importantly, the regular partners of those clients (if any) at risk. Legalising it, like it is in Holland can result in better sexual health and also restrict the sex slave industry.

Put it this way, it is a damm sight harder to force someone to work in a legal and regulated industry, than it would be now.

Hello,

(ANS) This is a massively contentious subject area, should prostitution be legal or illegal? Because its a morally (ethically) difficult issue there are many wide ranging opinions.

**I am definitely and totally against ANYONE being forced against their will, or coerced, or tricked into sexual slavery. I am against people from any country being trafficked or treated as goods or a commodity in order to make money from them.

**On the other hand I don’t think the problems associated with prostitution can be or will be solved by making sex in exchange for money illegal.

**May be one of the very few solutions is to make legalized red light districts, in large towns & cities located away from residential areas, a place where sex for money can be conducted legally (or with the authorities turning a blind eye) AND where the sex workers can be licensed and have to prove where they came from and as condition of working be made to have regular health check up’s etc.

**I think banning prostitution will almost certainly make the whole sex industry a far more dangerous and send both workers & punters underground. I think it would make it far more difficult to control too.

**I’ve seen several TV documentaries about Polish & Latvian girls kidnapped into the sex trade but eventually rescued. ALL of the stories were dreadfully shocking, upsetting, very disturbing & heart braking. You wouldn’t wish this kind of treatment on an animal let alone a young girl or woman. YES! some attempts must be made to stop the trade in young women & girls from other countries into the sex trade.
