help with a physics question ?

we say that when voltmeters or other high resistance devices are connected in a circuit in series , these devices will block the flow of current thus killing the circuit….. but what exactly is current – it is the flow of electrons precisely … so how can the electrons be used up or killed . they are meant to be flowing from one end to another in the circuit , right ! pls do answer
