Do you have to have the wii motion plus to play grand slam tennis?

I am considering getting the grand slam tennis game for my boyfriend, but i don’t think he has the wii motion plus. do you have to have the wii motion plus to play the game? Or does using only the wii remote alone work just as good?

Also if you don’t necessarily need the wii motion plus, do you find that there is much of a difference if you have one or not (like if it registers you movement as good)?
