Can you use dsi r4 cards in a DS?

I have a regular DS lite right now. I plan on buying a DSi very soon but until then I was going to purchase the R4 card. I know you can’t use DS R4 cards in the DSi, but what about DSi cards in the DS? That way I can put all my games on the R4 and play them until I get the new DSi.
